The Elements of Art: Line and Shape

The elements are the fundamental tools of visual expression:

  • Line — a moving point through space that defines boundaries, contours, and movement.
  • Shape — two-dimensional areas enclosed by lines, such as circles, squares, and organic forms.

The principles of design are how we arrange the elements of art:

Design principles turn a random collection of marks into a cohesive composition.
